Student job centre

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

AKA The Bridge!

The Bridge focuses on part time student employment by offering a ‘job centre’ and agency service for students and additionally by providing a facility for external and internal recruiters through the job shop. The service has great opportunities for students to find local employment in Preston, and holds several job fairs throughout the year to show students what’s available.  They also give application help with CVs and covering letters.

Here we have the opinions of people who have utilised what The Bridge has to offer…

A student who ended working for The Bridge comments:

“I was looking for a job on campus, within normal office hours to fit round my timetable.  I thought I would struggle to find anything, but as soon as I clicked onto The Bridge section of the UCLan website, I saw an advert for Customer Service Administrator for The Bridge office.  It looked perfect as it was on campus, and I already had experience of working in an employment department.  I applied, got an interview and was offered the job and have enjoyed working here ever since.”

A law student gained lots of work experience through The Bridge despite only registering in her third year:

“I registered with the Bridge early September 2008 when I started my search for a part time job. I joined The Bridge agency and was called to do a number of different temporary jobs. These gave me experience of working in various environments and developing skills to apply to the workplace such as improving my time management skills. I was successful in getting a job for the whole academic year after only three weeks of my job search. The Bridge is an invaluable source for students looking for a part time job.”

A student studying International Business didn’t utilise The Bridge until he had a negative work experience:

I was approached in the job centre in Preston by a recruitment representative who took my details and I was surprised when they immediately booked me in for some training the next day.  It was not an ideal student part time job as the working environment was very stressful, with very high targets to meet on each shift. Being an international student meant that I would be working for the company on a self employed basis and this conflicted with my visa requirements, which I didn’t originally know. I then heard about The Bridge and went to see them to get some advice and then gained work from them. They offered vacancies that would fit around my timetable meaning working between or after lectures and seminars.

The Bridge is based within the Student Union building, so is only a short walk away from most university buildings.
