Sexual health
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
Comments from students...
Forty thousand hormone-ravaged students piling into Preston for an academic year might understandably seem like you’ve died and gone to heaven, but many students actually come here study – believe it or not!
As Freshers’ Week unfolds and acquaintances are made, you can imagine that love blossoms all over the place. Yet, unfortunately, it’s not only love that blossoms!
Sexual health is something precious and often undervalued until it’s threatened by some sort of disease.
UCLan, to be fair, is very proactive at alerting people – especially those under 25 – to the dangers of sexually transmitted infections. If you have any concerns at all, about STIs or general health matters, get down to the Marsh Health Centre and talk to one of the professionals there, in confidence.
You don’t have to rely on UCLan though, there’s plenty of places you can get help and advice:
“If you’re under 25, there’s a website called ‘Better to Know’ and they can tell you about it. If you’re over 25, there’s a clinic at ‘Royal Preston Hospital’…”
“There’s the ‘Health Centre’, or ‘Avenham’ do a clinic on a Wednesday night, between 6 – 8.”
“I appreciate it so much when I’m over here, because it [advice] isn’t usually available in the USA. I mean, my university had condoms in one of the bathrooms.”
“You get the welfare people hanging round ‘53 Degrees’ and giving out free condoms.”
“They did it round ‘The Adelphi’ as well. They do it quite a lot. You get them at fresher’s week too. I think it makes it seem less like the sort of thing people don’t talk about.”
Just be safe and if you go out for a drink, be prepared in case you meet that special someone. It’s less embarrassing to discuss using a condom with your partner than discussing an STI with a nurse.
