Saving Planet Earth

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

Article by Yugo Gabriel Egboluche, MSc Business Management

An escape from the scorching summer sun, took me to the waters for some humid freshness. My stare at the retreating sea coasts, could not spot any shells; sea lions where nowhere to be seen. I could not help but drive back to my nearby hotel. Who cares about the little effect of the cars carbon emission? I stared at the streets full of litter, only to stumble over the empty well placed recycle bins.

What am I talking about, it is that which the global news agencies have discussed to an extent where it tends to be of less importance, yet enough has not been heard, because there might be more to come, if we don’t help fight the plagues of Global warming, endangered species, non degradable refuse dumps, lowering sea levels, deforestation and most recently Ash clouds – who knows what’s next?
The university has done its part with the implementation of the travel plan with the aim of supporting sustainable and active travel, providing recycle bins, supporting green motoring, and achieving the Carbon Trust Standard; what have we done?

If only our forbearers had the chance to tell us what harm we have done to planet earth, and what remains of our planet compared to when they lived. If only the woods could talk, the endangered species revolt and the seabed vomit its misplaced contents......
The fact that we are students, places us at the heart of this call to save our planet, because we stand as a gap between the old and the young.

Hard as it sounds, we can just start by reducing our individual carbon footprint, which starts by unplugging and switching off electrical appliances that are not in use, placing our rubbish in the right categories, engaging in sustainable travel either by joining the University’s BUG or by making use of the car sharing scheme.
The list is endless and time to act is now, so that we don’t gapingly proceed to a point of no return, a point of no retreat, no surrender, and a point when the hunter becomes the haunted. Our collective negligence is no excuse; age no barrier; status of no relevance. It’s our world.

We can help UClan to help save our World.
The ball is in our court, no holds barred, we can make it if we really want.
