So, aside from credit cards, putting your money in deposit accounts and freezing months’ worth of food that you and your mates clubbed together to buy, there are many ways of using your cash wisely.
- Buy an NUS card for a tenner and get loads of savings
- Ask absolutely every store you visit if they give student discount
- Look for student deals when buying bigger or more expensive items and always ask for discount
- Pay for rent as soon as you get your loan, grant or any financial support and put aside money to pay for all your outgoings
- Make sure you never go over your overdraft limit, to avoid penalty charges and don’t take an overdraft unless it one of those without charges
- Sign on with the Bridge and get in the habit of doing a bit of work each week. The discipline is good practice, you don’t spend while you’re working and you’ll have a few extra quid each month
- Treat yourself to one take-away meal each week and make it a special occasion so you don’t come to make it the norm each day
You will find out about saving money and getting discounts on the NUS website, studentbeans.com and at moneysavingexpert.com.
Have fun and be thrifty.
