Freedom street

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

by Yugo Gabriel Egboluche, MSc Business Management

It comes as different phrases – “a paradigm shift”, “trying out new tricks”, “a whole new world”, or perhaps, in the jet age “freedom”. No matter how sweet it sounds, it is an obvious drift away from the comfort zone.

It might be your first time of leaving home, a fulfilment of your desire to stay away from the watchful eyes of your parents and guardians, a period you have always expected to make new discoveries, or it might just be a giant leap. Scary, innit?

It is all about the college year(s) - a phase, were you become the master of your odds, a representation of the real you. Here, you can only choose to make or mar this vital route to self actualization. Whatever you choose to make out of it, bear it in mind, that what goes around comes around.

It is true that school life is best for an experience, yet it can only be best depending on the experiences you create – the good, the bad or the ugly. You can only listen to the jukebox as long as the music sounds good.

“Gotcha; how then do you think is best to walk along freedom street? What available options, are there, to avoid the possible pitfalls? Is it possible to walk this road alone?”
Well..... Because you asked, here lies an age long remedy to a ‘successful’ walk down Freedom Street.

A tip from those that are successfully  walking through freedom street, with their heads held high would do – call them mentors, buddies, support advisors or counsellors – UCLan has them all. Besides, a whole lot depends on you; don’t say I didn’t tell you.

Walk therefore through freedom street and stumble not, learn and avoid the jumble, speak and mumble not, associate and fumble not, have fun and grumble not .................its freedom street. So “let’s get ready to rumble”, but don’t forget - stay humble.
