Behaviour in halls
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
The large majority students who live in halls have a fantastic time, make great friends and generally have a blast. However, there has been an increase in the number of students facing disciplinary procedures due to behaviour in halls.
Now it is most likely that a lot of these disciplinaries are related to smoking in halls, being loud and parties. However, unfortunately there are occasions where the breech of regulations is more serious such as excessively disruptive behaviour and trashing flats.
It’s not big and it’s not clever and let me assure you the students breaking the rules GET CAUGHT AND DEALT WITH!
Punishment for breeching regulations depends on the offence committed and range from a verbal warning to being referred for investigation under the Regulations for the Conduct of Students where the outcome could be more drastic – e.g., final written warnings or expulsion from the University. Students who break the law are reported to the police.
UCLan work closely with the police - there is even a police house on campus. So those breaking the law not only had to face up to the university but to potential criminal charges. Some 1st year students are on their last warning already; this means that even if breech the regulations in a relatively small way that leads to disciplinary procedures for the rest of the time they are at UCLan, they could be expelled.
Yes the university will kick students out of university who break the rules and it will do so to protect the experience of the students who don’t. If you are expelled you may find it very hard to find another university who will take you as information about your expulsion is shared. If you go through disciplinary procedures it will go on your record and may be included in any future references, which may affect your employability!
Its not that the university doesn’t want you to have fun and enjoy yourself, you just need to know the limits. Having friends round for a few drinks and a bit company is great. Having a party, making excessive noise, getting so drunk you have no idea what is happening and trashing the place is not ok!
Don’t let this article worry you about living in halls as we said before the majority of students have a great time in halls and there are plenty of people to help you if someone is causing trouble. The halls are patrolled and the teams are experienced with dealing with troublemakers and the ability to small cigarette smoke!
