Behaving at uni
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
University is all about freedom and independence, however there are still regulations that you are expected to abide by. These rules have been created to protect the students, staff and the university and are basic common sense.
Simple things such as don’t cheat, don’t damage property, don’t physically or verbally abuse fellow students or members of staff and don’t undertake illegal activities such as smoking in halls, doing drugs, etc.
If you break the rules you will face disciplinary procedures and yes you can be excluded from the university, so if you are thinking “the uni will never kick me out no matter what I do, they want all of us to pass”, think again! The university will not tolerate a student spoiling the experience for others.
It is worthwhile reading the regulations and section D2 at the very least! Ignorance is not an excuse when it comes to disciplinary hearings and when you enrol at UCLan you agree to abide by the regulations. Many breeches lead to a final warning, so if you get one in first year you will spend the rest of your time at UCLan making sure you do nothing else as one slip-up and you will be out!
So here are some things to remember;
• Treat fellow students and staff with respect.
• Do not vandalise property, cause criminal damage or encourage others to do so.
• Not remembering because you are drunk will not get you off the hook – CCTV on campus is very good so you will be caught!
• The university will follow up each case even if it takes months.
• You are not in a protective bubble as a student, if you break the law on campus you will face charges.
• UCLan work very closely with the police and, yes, they will call them.
• Do not make up false allegations against other students and staff.
There are also regulations the university follows to ensure you get a fair deal, so don’t worry, it works both ways. As we said these regulations are to protect you; some students have done serious damage to their relationships, career prospects and to themselves by breeching them and we don’t want that to happen to you.
