Social networking and the UCLan regs

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

Social networking and the internet can be great ways to meet people, keep in touch with friends and to arrange social activities, but be warned if you are caught breeching university regulations using these tools you will face disciplinary procedures and trust me, a lot of students do. These measures are in place to protect students and staff from bullying, harassment or libellous comments and to protect the university.  I can assure you UCLan takes this very seriously.

So here are a few golden rules;

• Be Nice!
If you put anything on the internet or distribute something electronically that could be perceived as threatening, harassment, defamatory or libellous you could face disciplinary procedures within the university and potentially criminal charges.  Remember the individual who it was aimed at might chose to take civil action (report the incident to the police), independently of any action taken by the university.  If you have an issue with a member of staff or a student talk to your Course Rep, Student Liaison Officer (SLO) or the Complaints and Disciplinary Team.

• Do not use the university logo or appear to represent the university.
It is just as important to you as a student here as it is for the university to build and maintain a good reputation.

• Do not say you are going to breech regulations!
If you encourage anyone or say that you will do anything to breech university regulations such as have a wild party in your halls, “trash the place” (you get the picture!), you will face disciplinary procedures.

• Read the regulations!
Yes they might look very long and dull but many students face disciplinary procedures because they didn’t realise they had breeched regulations.

• Have some common sense!
If it’s against the law it’s against regulations!

• Don’t put pictures up of your friends that they do not want on the internet.
Employers, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends and parents are on Facebook so if you have an embarrassing picture of your friend, don’t put it online unless they say it’s ok!

The university monitor social networking sites so you will get caught! Not only that, if you are studying on a course that will lead to a professional qualification you may not be allowed to continue if you have a criminal record.

What you post on the internet will be used in evidence against you!  If you have any questions or have any concerns about material you or others have posted online contact:……
