WISER - study support
What can WISER do for you? Quite simply it can help you to develop your academic study skills in order to become a much more effective student at university and get better marks for assignments and exams. It can enhance the skills needed in your Personal Development Planning (PDP).
How? WISER offers specialist study advice and guidance to ALL students at the University from Year 1 to postgraduates. Choose a tutorial or attend a workshop or both! Details on the website.
Julie Ramsden is a mature student who studied a Post-Graduate diploma in Personnel Management and Development. She was very pleased with the help she received:
“The service is absolutely brilliant and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The support and guidance I received helped me achieve 77% and 76% respectively for a reflection piece and a literature review. I have also attended workshops in critical reading, exam technique, the writing process and writing up research data. These workshops have all been extremely well presented and very useful for my studies, particularly as I am a mature student who has not studied since 1988. Finally, the WISER service has enabled me to feel more confident in my own academic abilities and has reflected back in the marks gained over the last 18 months of study.”
Kimberley Manktelow was having problems with academic writing until her course tutors pointed her in the direction of WISER:
“The service has been a great help to me. By using the help I have been able to vastly increase my written marks. It has helped me to feel less concerned about my written assignments as I felt supported by the service and I could receive help and guidance when required.”
Rebecca Hussey studied a BSc Hons in Health Sciences for Complementary Medicine, she got WISER’s help before it was too late:
“I discovered Wiser at the end of my studies when I had to do some re-sits. They were recommended to me. My experience using Wiser was a good one as the lecturers are very supportive, have great patience and don’t mind how many questions you ask!! I feel that WISER had a great impact to my studies pointing out little things which would make a big difference, for example helping me to see what a question was asking for, spelling, grammar, order and lay out of work. It would have been a great if I found Wiser earlier, as it would have helped me a great deal with other assignments.”
Danii Ryan studied Police and Criminal Investigation and wished she’d had the extra push the WISER could have given her:
“I was never very clear on how to reference and wasn’t confident I was doing it properly. I also sometimes struggled with structuring essays and often felt I was ‘making it up as I went along’ - and then there’s my dissertation. I had no idea where to begin and I ended up rushing that! My marks were always quite good so I felt like I was getting on okay without the extra help. My final degree grade was 67-point-something percent. I can’t help thinking that if I’d gone to WISER it might have helped me to get that extra three percent and get a first! Now I work at the University I often promote the service to students and I always hear about how much it has helped them. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!”
So you’ve heard it from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, go and get the help that’s waiting for you.
