Here are some links to tools that could help you develop your basic academic skills before you get to university. 
 
Think about it, would you rather have the basic skills in place and concentrate on learning the subject(s) you plan to study or learn how to write and essay, take notes, research, etc. AND learn about your subject at the same time?

Remember every course is different so although these tools will help you grasp the basics, you should always make sure you know the style in which your lecturer wants the work produced. 

Learning and Teaching Scotland - It says its for 15 - 18 year olds but it gives handy information on how to get the most out of a lecture, essay writing, learning styles, referencing, etc.

Skills4Study - Learning strategies, personal effectiveness, writing  skills, thinking skills and exam help.

Know it all - From the Northwest Learning Grid.  Understand how we learn, get help with revision and exams and develop study skills.

The Royal Literary Fund - Help with essay writing skills including planning and structure, making an argument and understanding the question. By the way UCLan has a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at UCLan who is here to help you with your writing skills!
