Helping you develop the basic skills to get your started at UCLan

"My first two years of uni I missed way too many lectures and was hung-over way too many days. Being in my final year now, a lot of my friends and I agree we only learned ‘the ways’ of life at university this past year. The best advice that I wish I’d be given in first year is to do assignments when you get them.. not the night before the deadline. I can’t even count how many all nighters I went through during second year and my grades suffered. Put time into your work, and leave enough time to proof read everything, as you will notice little mistakes when you re-read your work. You will appreciate this in third year when trying to calculate if you will have that extra few percent to get from a 2.2 to a 2.1." - Ciara Palomino, Public Relations, 3rd year, age 21.

The way you approach work changes when you get to university.  If you have just left school or have been out of education for a period of time you may find some aspects of university a little difficult.

There are a huge range of assignment types that you might be set depending on your course from a short essay to a live project.  In this section you will find a few basic skills that will help you get started and when you get to university you can concentrate on learning your subject!
