Thinking of starting a business?
Northern Lights is a comprehensive business support programme for students, graduates and eligible businesses throughout the Northwest. The programme includes free to low cost business workspace options, the use of computers with broadband access, telephone, fax and printing facilities, one-to-one business mentoring and group learning sessions, networking events, business competitions and a meeting room. These are all based in the media factory.
Several students have utilised Northern Lights’ services, let’s hear from them:
A Multimedia and Sonic Arts student decided to get involved with Northern Lights after hearing about it at a careers event:
“I had an idea of starting a production company and Northern Lights was a platform for me to utilise to move on with my business. From there I established DMC Media and recently started Addictive Media (a social enterprise). We have also recently secured £10,000 of lottery funding. I have made so many contacts through Northern Lights’ networking events and have benefited from their bookkeeping workshops, mentoring, advice, and office space. I would recommend the service to anyone wishing to start their own business.”
An Interior Design student has also set up his own business with the help of Northern Lights:
“I was referred to Northern Lights by a careers adviser. I attended a networking event in the Media Factory where I got to meet with lots of people with business ideas or already trading. This helped give me inspiration to start up my own interior design business. My business is now up and running thanks to the support from Northern Lights including their help in assisting me to draw up a business plan. I would advise all students to meet with the northern lights team as starting a business is an exciting career option.”
Northern Lights is part of the Futures service at UCLan.
