Having just applied or arrived at university, I am sure that leaving is the last thing on your mind. But it will come around sooner than you think, so my advice to you is to hit the ground running and start building a great CV right away. Part time work is a great place to start but there are so many other fantastic opportunities. Here are some ways you can get involved:

The SU has a newspaper (Pluto), a radio station (Frequency) and a TV station (PSTV). They offer the budding journalist or the future Chris Moyles a great opportunity to flex their creative muscles. You don’t have to be a future journalist to get involved with the SU media, just enthusiasm.

The University has an extensive course rep system. Students elect classmates to represent them through out the academic year. Course reps attend the Student Staff Liaison Meetings with your lecturers to discuss any problems or issues the class may be having and also any good practice to tell them what they’re doing right.  Course reps can also run for the two school rep positions and sit on Students’ Council with the Student Affairs Committee, helping to make real changes to the University.

There are forums for every aspect of being a student, from a halls forum, to an environment and ethics forum to an LGBT forum, all to get your voice heard.. The SU also has over 30 student run clubs and societies to join, but if you can’t find something to suit, grab 10 of your new friends and set one up. When you find one you love, if you become a committee member (i.e. chairperson, secretary or treasurer) this will look great on your CV. You can contact sucampaigns@uclan.ac.uk to find out more

Lastly to help you make the most of all this fantastic volunteering, visit ‘Futures’ who will help you build a great CV and will give helpful advice, so when you do leave you will have made the most of your time here and have a great CV to show for it.
