Local supermarkets
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
Preston has a few supermarkets (ALDI, Iceland etc.) dotted around the city although Morrisons, Sainsbury's and ASDA are outside the city centre. ASDA is on the outskirts of Preston although it really is the easiest to get to by bus. You can catch bus number 23 either from town or from any bus stop on Plungington road and it will take you outside of the front doors of ASDA which is excellent news when you have lots of shopping to carry home! The bus journey is about 15 or 20 minutes depending on the time of day and traffic. Sainsbury’s is just off Sir Tom Finney way near PNE. You can catch the 19 / 19A bus which will drop you off close to the supermarket. For Morrisons you can catch bus numbers 75 and 89, you can catch these busesfrom Fishergate in te ity centre and they will drop you off at Preston’s beautiful docklands!
Alternatively, you can use the Orbit 88A and 88C buses. These are circular bus routes that go from the bus station and travel anti–clockwise (88A) and clockwise (88C) around Preston passing ASDA, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s. It's best to catch the 88A bus to go to Sainsbury's in Deepdale (the bus stop on Sir Tom Finney Way) as this is the first supermarket the bus passes. The bus continues onto ASDA and then onto Morrisons last (the bus stop on Mariners Way) on its way back to the bus station. The 88C goes clockwise around Preston and goes past Morrisons first, then ASDA and passes Sainsbury's on its way back to the bus station. Service 23 can be caught from town or outside the campus on Plungington Road and also heads to ASDA.
If you want frozen foods then there is an Iceland supermarket next to the market. ALDI is on Corporation Street in the city centre which is next to Brunel halls and about a two minute walk from the Harris and Foster buildings. Neighbouring shops include an Instore, Blockbuster and Streetwise Sports. There is a one hour free car park for customers only. Be aware, you will get fined if you stay longer than you should!
If you can't be bothered with the walk into town then there is an Essentials shop on campus and newsagents on Fylde Road and Plungington Road where the basics such as coffee and bread can be bought. Plungington Road also has Spar and a Co-Op which are open ‘til late, and are about a ten minute stroll or a five minute brisk walk away from town and the campus.
If you don't fancy a trip to the supermarket then your in luck! The University is close to the Preston Market which is in the city centre and about a five or ten minute walk from university (depending on which building you are at). The market sells fresh produce such as meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and bread. The market has both indoor and outdoor facilities, although the food is mainly sold in the indoor market on the first floor. It worth checking out the indoor market for your fresh fruit and veg as its cheap and generally locally produced so it's fresh, fresh, fresh!!!
If you want to drive then all supermarkets are relatively easy to get to. If you are unsure then use a route planner to acurate directions.
