How academics and the uni contact you

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

There are many ways you can receive information from the university, whether it be from a member of the school admin team, your academics or central university.

When you enrol as a student you are given a UCLan email address.  Although you also have the option of registering a personal email account with the university, generally the UCLan email is the email address used to send you information.

There is a tool which generates email lists for staff to send mass emails to all students registered on a course.  Generally staff chose to send the email to your UCLan email account as all students have a UCLan email and the staff know these addresses are correct.

It is considered to be your responsibility to access your UCLan email account. “I don’t check my UCLan email” is not considered to be a good reason for not receiving the information.  If you chose not to use your UCLan you should set up a rule that forwards all your emails to your personal account.  If you don’t know how to do this contact LIS on  01772 895355

Your UCLan email is also where the student AU Lookout email is sent.  AU Lookout is an electronic newsletter, which helps to keep students informed about activities and events going on across the campus.  Also included is any relevant safety information. We know a lot of students ignore this email, which is a shame as you never know what might be happening at the university that could be really interesting and beneficial to you.

You will also see lots of notice boards around the university as most courses have them.  You will also find notice boards for school offices, services, etc. You should check your course notice board on a regular basis and it is always worth having a scan over other notice boards that you pass as again, you never know what could be posted on there that could be of benefit for you.

You may also receive post from UCLan so it is important that you register both your home and term time addresses with the university as important mail could be posted to the wrong address.

Additionally, there is a system at UCLan where we can send a text message to students.  This is used by some academics, but not all, when a lesson has been cancelled or a room changed at very short notice.  If your academics use this service and you are happy to receive messages, you should ensure your correct mobile number is registered.
