TAG UCLan - The Alternative Guide (to UCLan)

futures disability support

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

As part of the careers team within 'futures', there is a careers adviser dedicated to supporting deaf students and those with health conditions and disabilities.  Students can get help with career direction, application forms, CVs, mock interviews and support with issues relating to disclosure of disabilities in the workplace.

Let’s hear from those who have used the service…

A BA (Hons) Social Welfare Student used the service to help them secure employment:

“What futures helped me most with was advice on how to tackle issues of disclosure when applying for jobs. They advised me on how to notify employers about my hearing to ensure that I could hear and understand questions clearly in my interview. I also attended a workshop on ‘disclosing disability’, which helped me to be confident about how I disclosed the support I needed.  That advice and guidance has been invaluable to me as it helped me to get my job with Lancashire County Council and will be one of my lasting memories of my time at UCLan.”

A MSc Business Management student had negative experiences until he met with the 'futures' Disability Careers Adviser:

“Due to past negative experiences at college, I felt that the advisers would not have the knowledge required to deal with my enquiries. Since graduating I have been recommended to meet the careers adviser who deals with disabilities, and now I feel I would have benefited if I had used the service earlier.”

This service is open to all students and can be accessed throughout the year, even after graduation.
