International 'futures'

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

‘futures’ offers a specialised service aimed at both international and UK students with an overseas interest.  Throughout the year, futures run specialised workshops for international students on topics relating to postgraduate study and global labour market, CV / job search sessions and one-to-one careers guidance appointments

But what do the students think?

A student who is studying BSc Management Information Systems has found the service very helpful:

“In summer 2008, I’d just arrived from China. I went to Futures with a part time job application form. The adviser assisted me to think about my skills, useful past experiences and the demands of the job. This helped me to fill in the form and it prepared me for the interview too. I got the job and it has had a big impact on my life in terms of money and communication in English. I am continuing go to Futures for support now that I am thinking what to do after finishing my degree this year.”

A student who is studying for a MSc International Applied Communication, wished he could have accessed a service like Futures: International sooner:

“I started my postgraduate studies at UCLan this academic year. Personally, I would have liked to have had access to a service like this sooner during my studies in the Netherlands. 'futures' is a unique department with very good staff and services. The advice I received was very productive and it helped me to improve my CV in preparation for recruitment events.

An international student who is studying for a  MSc Global Management also wishes he has accessed the service sooner:

“I graduate in May 2009 and have just started to focus on thinking about my future now. I wish I had started much earlier in my first or second year with help from a careers adviser, in focusing on securing an internship. I have a part time job as an English Teacher teaching on a one-to-one basis and have also worked as a cleaner in a public house. Now, I am being encouraged to reflect on what skills I have gained and to access the sessions taking place now in 'futures'.”

This service is helpful to all who want to work abroad or who have come to study from outside the UK.
