University is a life-changing experience. As well as working towards a degree there are plenty of opportunities to develop yourself and improve your level of employability.

The Frontier Education Programme at Tyn Dwr is a quality learning experience available to UCLan students. There are two types of course available, one designed for first year students and one targeted at final year students; both courses aim to facilitate personal development, and promote learning in the outdoors.

Onsite facilities include a full high ropes course, BMX track, archery and social activities. The surrounding countryside provides easy access for climbing, fell-walking, kayaking, mountain-biking and much more.

The activities are designed to be exciting and support team working, leadership and problem solving skills. For example, in the ‘fantasy bomb removal’ exercise a team of eight are given three ropes to safely remove a weighted cylinder from the centre of a circle and have to work together to solve the problem successfully. There is also a classroom element to the programme where students are able to reflect on their personal skills, hopes, fears, dreams and aspirations.

The programme helps to build confidence in students by pushing personal boundaries, with the purpose of developing those all-important employability skills.

The scheme was driven by reports of rising graduate unemployment. As budget cuts and redundancies have contributed to the increase in job applicants, UCLan is working to give their graduates the edge when it comes to employability skills. In addition to taking part in these exciting activities there are plenty of opportunities to gain valuable transferable skills which employers are interested to see when reading over a CV.

The course is run using experienced instructors from Pro-Active Adventure and is an action packed three days not to be missed! But don’t just take our word for it. Here is what other students thought about the Frontier Education Programme:

The programme was brilliant fun and is really useful when applying for jobs. The problem solving situations make for great answers to interview questions and I learnt so much about myself while I was there." Natalie Whittle, a Final Year Nutrition Student.

“I took part in the Frontier Education Programme in my final year of university and can only wish I had gone sooner! It was a great experience and a perfect opportunity to make new friends while developing valuable skills.” Bianca Mulligan, a Third Year Public Relations Student.

“After hearing how beneficial the Frontier Education Programme could be for my future, as well as how much fun my friends had, I wish I had gone in my first year at university.” Kirsty Cottam, a Third Year Public Relations and Marketing Student.

Frontier Education is a fantastic opportunity to improve your CV, helping your personal development in areas such as team work, leadership and problem solving. It is also a great way of meeting new people, making your university life happier and more successful.
