Combining subjects
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

When I applied to university I was still unsure about what path to go down. Public Relations and Marketing really interested me; I wanted to do both so I thought about combining the two by choosing a combined honours degree.
There are pros and cons to choosing combined honours, sometimes I feel there are some modules I miss out on in each subject and this can mean I don’t fully understand a topic because I haven’t covered that particular module. Also, sometimes I do not have a chance to meet all the academic staff teaching the subject.
However, I feel I have benefited as I have gained substantial knowledge of two industries. This means that when I graduate I will have the ability to perform in either industry, giving me more options for the future. I have also met friends from both PR and Marketing classes, so it has enabled me to meet and work with a varied group of people.
I would definitely advise someone who is not sure about what to do at university to choose a combined honours course. This way you can learn about two different subjects and if you are not happy with one you can always do a single honours course instead. You will come to find that you prefer one over the other, in my case I enjoy Public Relations more, as this is the industry I am hoping to work in after I graduate. For your third year you get the choice of which subject you want to base your dissertation on, which again gives you more freedom and options.
