Becoming employable
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
By Yugo Gabriel Egboluche, MSc Business Management
It is a choice to be swallowed up among the crowd, and a choice to stand alone and man the crowd. Interestingly, everyone finds these choices demanding especially in a high school or college setting. The question is, would you just pass by as a graduate student of UCLan, or would you not rather prefer UCLan to remember you passed through it?
As students of UCLan, we are posed with various opportunities to enable us come out as equipped graduates; if only we utilise them.
If ‘YES’ is your answer to the latter, all you need do is start from where you are. A look into our course of study brings out opportunities to become student representatives or team leaders – though it may sound ineffective because the roles are within the confines of your course work; there are bold steps in the right direction. Our spare time at UCLan, should not be spent only behind HD or blue ray screens, but should be spent constructively. The Students’ Union Clubs and Societies provide enormous extra-curricular activities aimed at building us physically, mentally and socially. You cannot underestimate the value making friends in an international setting such as this, while improving our marketable inter-personal and team work skills.
The above might start looking good on your C.V, wait till you know what the Futures hub is all about! As the name implies, it’s all about you, your future, and your employability. Go cast your burdens of writing up a marketable C.V, indecision of a career path, and interview tensions upon them; for they care. A trial will convince you.
A touch by the Futures team activities and programmes, will sure boost your confidence while applying for part-time or graduate jobs within and around the University. In essence, the pool of job opportunities – whether casual or professional - advertised by the bridge and futures job portal, would not seem ‘no go areas’ to you.
It’s your choice to become an Active, Itinerant, or Passive student. “Don’t even ask me what that means”, you get the message – it’s you against the crowd!
Don’t just walk the path of the crowd, because walking the path of others, makes you discover less, since nobody can be you. ‘Hey’, it’s all about Time Management, lest you become a self centred student. Do the socials; take the stroll, but your destiny lies in your hands.
UCLan sure houses a host of students, but few can be said to stand out because they choose a path they believe in. You can be counted as one.
UCLan believes in you.
Make the best of now, you might not have it back.
It’s your destiny, it’s in your hands, and it’s you.
