Sustainable travel

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

Bikes

Travel is a big part in reducing carbon emissions, as most people are aware the University offers many alternative methods of travel!

You may or may not be aware of the University’s BUG which is the Bicycle User Group. The University offers a scheme where you can get discount at particular bike stores and they may even buy your bike back off you when you graduate!

Or maybe bike riding isn’t your thing, maybe try walking. It’s a great way to exercise which saves you on a gym subscription, fee’s for the bus/train/petrol and also is more economical for the University. If walking into Uni isn’t practical for you then simple things like walking up the stairs in buildings rather than taking the lift is a great way to do your part!

If you need to drive to uni, then we offer some friendly advice on how to drive economically which could save fuel costs by 15%. Top tips include removing unnecessary weight, keeping speeds down, driving smoothly, checking tyre pressures, regular maintenance and planning your journeys in advance.

On occasions I have had to commute to uni from home which is just over 60 miles away, I am very conscious about the way I drive and it’s very noticeable that driving 10mph under the speed limit on the motorway saves you a fair bit of petrol which in a recession every penny counts! It also reduces the fumes as your not constantly hammering the throttle the whole journey!”
