Student Liaison Officers
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
Want to speak to someone who has been there and done that?
Student Liaison Officers (SLOs) are recent graduates or placement students, employed across the university to support both students and staff by developing strong links and communicating information between the university, schools, students’ union, course representatives and the student body, to help enhance the student experience.
Let' hear from your Burley SLO Asad Haidry:
"I am Asad Ali Haidry your Student Liaison Officer. My role at the University is to support you through your academic study and to help make this experience the best one of your academic career. I am always available to discuss any matters that you would like whether it is regarding university related issues, course issues, matters outside university that may affect your academic work or just to have a friendly chat over coffee. Any problems please feel free to come and see me, and do not let small problems get in the way of learning and having fun at the same time. I have an open door policy so you can call me, email me or pop into the office at any time – and if I can not directly help you I will find someone who can. I have plenty of experience being a student at UCLan as I have studied for both my Undergraduate and Post Graduate degrees at UCLan. With this experience I can understand student concerns and issues and effectively find you a solution to your needs."
SLO's also provide a referral point for students to seek impartial, confidential advice, support and guidance on any issue or question which may arise during the course of their study.
Many students speak to their SLOs, about a range of issues…
A Hospitality Management student, 22 spoke about her experience:
“I was feeling alienated and felt like I wanted to transfer to a different university.
The SLO was very helpful and when I got upset he helped to calm me down. He tried to establish what exactly the problem was and went through a few of my options. He made an appointment for me to see the senior tutor to talk about transferring if that’s what I still wanted to do. I feel a lot better now I am getting to try out some different options.”
A student studying Music Production was feeling low, so went to get advice from his SLO…
“I was feeling down and not making many friends when I came to university. I talked with the SLO and he referred me to the counselling service to talk to someone. He also took me through some of the social activities at UCLan and we made a three week plan. I ended up getting really involved with the music society and met loads of new people. It’s really helped me make friends and get more involved.”
A 19 year old Social Work student wasn’t aware of her SLO…
“I was having trouble with people on my course and wanted advice as I was being called into a meeting with my tutors about my conduct. I was asked by my tutor to seek some impartial advice on what the university expects of students and what happens in disciplinary procedures. I felt that the Advice Centre in Students’ Union would be suitable at giving me detailed information, although I’m sure this is where the SLO would have sent me, as well as providing me with his advice if I’d approached him with this issue.”
There are one or more SLOs for each school, working on a full-time basis. The SLO's treat all problems and issues confidentially and can liaise with university staff members if there are serious problems occurring. On a brighter note, they are there if you just fancy a chat about uni or if you want to become a course rep, and always have their door open to students.
