Support for students with disabilities
A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!
Disability Services is part of Student Services and works closely with academic and services across the university. The service provides information, advice and guidance for applicants and students with disabilities on a wide range of matters including Assessment of Need, study support arrangements, examination arrangements, additional support workers funding .
Lets here from a Public Relations Graduate;
"I was told by my lecturer at college that they thought I was dyslexic. I contacted the disability service once I had been accepted at UCLan and had an assessment arranged. I met with an educational psychologist wo got me to do a range of tests, from seeing if I could touch my nose to writing down what he dictated to me. Some stuff I managed fine but I could not make the picture with the blocks no matter how hard I tried and it was so obvious once he showed me!
I was diagnosed with dyslexia and I was sent a report, which detailed how it affected my learning and what support I needed. I was told that as long as I was happy for it to be disclosed it would be shared with my tutors. Then all I had to do was stick disability stickers on my work to let the tutors know I was dyslexic. I didn’t need too much support as I was not severe but others got much more support like extra tutors for help with tackling their assignments.
Student services was the other end of campus so I often did not bother going to collect the stickers which in hindsight was probably a mistake! But hey I still got a 2.1!
Apparently lots of students do not alert the university of a disability until they actually arrive. So many students declare disabilities that the process can take quite a while. So I recommend to any student with a disability or suspected disability that they contact the service as soon as they have a place! It was so easy for me and by the time uni started my support was already set up."
