TAG UCLan - The Alternative Guide (to UCLan)

Potential students

A realistic Guide to life at UCLan - written by students!

Do you ever feel your new students are not as prepared for university as they could be?

Well here is the answer…hopefully!

TAG will help your potential students prepare for university both socially and academically.

TAG features experiences from current student of all aspect of university life from where to go in Preston to students’ issues and the support services they used to help them.  TAG also features resources to help students develop their basic academic skills such as referencing, note taking, etc.

Students who are a bit rusty on the basics will also find resources to help them with maths, punctuation and grammar.

You can also direct students who cannot visit the campus to the TAG video campus tour!

Please encourage students to visit the TAG website in any communication you have with them.

"The Comptroller and Auditor General released a report in 2007, which looked at retention in HE. The report showed, based on the work of several researchers in the field, reasons for withdrawal included; personal reasons, wrong choice of course, lack of integration, dissatisfaction with course/institution, lack of preparedness, financial reasons and to take up a more attractive opportunity.

The report reflects the work by Yorke (1999) and Yorke and Longden (2004) on student withdrawal. Thomson and Quinn (2007) provide an insight as to why the transition into HE can be problematic for student, suggesting it could be that the students might not have peers or family experiences to draw on. They also state that students may be unaware of support available or they think they are not the type of person the service is intended for.

Cook et al (2006) suggest that for each student who leaves, there must be more who are having difficulties, yet are just managing to remain at university. It is suggested that these students are likely not be reaching their maximum potential. Over the past ten years, researchers appear to be finding consistent results as to why students withdraw from HE and lack of preparation and unrealistic expectations seem to be the main focus."
